Friendly Bed & Breakfast in Athlone, "The Heart of Ireland"

tripadvisor

The waterways around Athlone are renowned for their course fishing and one can fish in the many rivers, lakes and canals in the vicinity. The Shannon is a large deep slow moving river and holds good stock of Bream, Roach, Rudd, Perch, Pike and Tench. Access is very good, where little walking is needed. The "Meadows" below Athlone is one of the best known match lengths in Ireland, where excellent fishing is achieved in 8-12ft at the top end, and 20ft at the canal end. The feeder and waggler are the most common methods but a pole can give excellent sport.

The river Inny gives great fishing in May and June and bags of 200lb plus are common. The river Suck like the Shannon is a slow moving deep river with good access, the area around Ballyforan being particularly good. Barrymore Point on Lough Ree is quite good, with many Bream over 8lb and in recent years Roach over 2lb have been caught.

Trout fishing is good in May and June. Pike fishing has become very good with the explosion in the roach population and many 20lb specimens have been landed. It is always advisable to carry Pike tackle as part of your kit, should the need arise.
